The Winds
The Eastern Coast of Africa has two seasonal winds.
The South-East Trade(Kusi)
which blows from May to November, a strong gusty wind which brings the rains, rough water and mud from the Tana River. During this time most boat movement takes place along inshore channels.
The North-East Trade(Kas Kazi)
Blows from December to April. This summer wind brings calm, clear water and the fishing season. Occasionally there are strong winds, but storms are rare.

The Tides
There are two Low and High tides daily, with 12 hours between each. The cycle is about one hour later each day. The deference between between High and Low tides vary with the moon.
Spring Tide occurs every two weeks on the Full and New moons, with as much as 4 metres difference. During spring tides the current is very strong in front of Peponi.
i Neap Tide occurs on both half moons and has a d
ifference of only 1 metre between High and Low tide. Since the movement is so little, the water tends to be at its clearest over the Neap Tides.

DHOW TRIPS.
Local Dhows are great for trips around Lamu Island and are run on a rota system to ensure that all the crews get a chance.

Sunset trips with the local Dhows and their friendly crews are very popular.

Sailing to Takwa Ruins on Manda island is a 3hr round trip by sail dhow, at High tide only and is a great way to spend part of your day.

Matondoni - (dhow building village) 3hrs return by motor dhow, 5-6 hrs under sail.

Full Moon Dhow Cruise
Full moon cruise with drinks, wine and lobster dinner, under sail in Lamu harbour (Min 8 pax)
.

Fishing Trips and Day Trips
Bottom fishing with handlines and cooking what you catch on the beach over a charcoal fire is always enjoyed by the children, and is a great family outing.

A full day trip by Dhow to the coral reefs for some snorkeling and followed by a BBQ lunch can be organized and is a great way to spend the day.

Kinyika - (goggling) 2hrs by motor dhow

Motor Dhow Charter
It is possible to hire a motor dhow or sailing Dhow for an Hour or for a longer trip, to explore the Lamu Archipelago. Peponi has two larger dhows which can be chartered.

There are two main dhow races held in Shela. One is held in August called the French Twin Star Cup and requires a european crew member on each dhow.

The largest is the New Years Day Dhow race which attracts a lot of Dhows and spectators. It is the Le Mans start with a number prizes to be won by the Dhows
